In Azazel Jacobs' poignant tragicomedy, three estranged sisters come together in their father's cramped Manhattan apartment, where old wounds resurface as they confront the reality of his impending death.

Vincent, their father, is dying, and this is perhaps the only thing Rachel (Natasha Lyonne), Christina (Elizabeth Olsen), and Katie (Carrie Coon) can agree on. Gathered in the small apartment Vincent (Jay O. Sanders) once called home, with Rachel serving as his caretaker, the unresolved tensions between the sisters begin to boil over.

Azazel Jacobs, known for his raw and insightful exploration of family dynamics in Momma’s Man (2008), once again proves his skill in His Three Daughters, a film that shines in its simplicity and emotional depth. Shot almost entirely in the claustrophobic confines of the apartment, the story balances tragedy and comedy with exquisite precision. The film's only breath of fresh air is when Rachel steps outside briefly, driven there by Katie’s disdain for her habit of indulging in “top shelf” weed.

This is a subtle and restrained piece of filmmaking that lets the screenplay and performances take center stage—and what performances they are. In a fair world, Lyonne, Olsen, and Coon would be prime contenders for awards this season. Carrie Coon’s portrayal of Katie is fierce and guarded, her superiority evident in her crossed arms and rapid-fire delivery of judgment. Elizabeth Olsen brings Christina, the youngest, to life with a dreamy, disconnected presence, her smile tinged with confusion. As Rachel, the outsider and step-sister, Natasha Lyonne delivers a beautifully nuanced performance, revealing that she’s as adept at drama as she is at comedy.

In this intimately crafted film, Jacobs offers a profound reflection on sibling relationships, grief, and the messiness of family.
